Photovoltaic Panels – How Effective are They?

Home solar panels or more popularly known as photovoltaic panels or systems effectively convert the rays of the sun into electrical energy. Each panel is composed of solar cell made of semi conductive material like crystalline silicon.

This silicon absorbs sunlight with optimum efficiency. Home solar panels are created in several layers, and have a clear protection layer on top of them. The layers of conduction cells are found between while the underneath layer is found the polymer material.

The mechanism of photovoltaic panels is quite simple. Solar collection works with the top layer being treated electrically negative and the bottom layer treated positively. This in effect makes the electrons found in the silicon loosen by the rays of the sun and go from the bottom layer to the top. These electrons pass through electric contacts, eventually going to a circuit and finally creating electric power.

Home solar panels are very popular simply because they are one of the most efficient means of alternative power. Photovoltaic panels produce the needed amounted of power given the ideal conditions. This helps provide power to turn on the lights as well as appliances of a common US home.

However, the degree of effectiveness of your home solar panels depends on where the location of the panels is. Photovoltaic panels should be installed on the side of the home where solar exposure is at its maximum. For example, for those in the south, the side that is north facing is where the panels should be. On the other hand, if you are in the north, you have to position your panels on the side that is facing the south.

The effectiveness of photovoltaic panels likewise depends on the amount of sunlight that it gets in a day. It must be exposed to six hours of sunlight every day for you to maximum the amount of energy that you will get and utilize as electrical power.
